NEGATIVE SAND MOLDS

Taught by Chuck Kraus (CSWE 110)

Thursday, October 9 and Friday, October 10. 1-6pm

$100.00 per person, includes 250 lbs of sand and 75 lbs of iron.

Negative Mold Carving in Bonded Sand: There will be 3 methods taught and demonstrated in this workshop. Each participant will be able to product one or more molds using these methods presented.

Methods:

#1. Using a two-piece mold that incorporates foam elements and then carving additional areas in the sand.

#2. Using a multiple-piece mold with sand blocks encased in a mother mold. Each of the internal blocks will be carved and then enclosed in the mother mold.

#3. The third method (which Professor Kraus will be doing himself to create a sculpture during this time) is the external carving of larger sand blocks which will be poured internally, but with the sprueing/gating system removed after casting.

MOTIVATION AND INSPIRATION: A NEW SAND MOLD CASTING TECHNIQUE

Taught by Hanna Jubran

Thursday, October 9 and Friday, October 10, 1-6 p.m.

$100.00

In this workshop you will learn how to integrate stone, found objects and other materials combined with a core and the direct sand mold carving process. This is a complex process that produces excellent results. This workshop will encompass a new technique (that the instructor formulated) of directly carving into a block of resinbonded sand. He will show you how to cut layers in the resin-bonded sand to produce open lattice patterns that will integrate with another material already imbedded in the sand. This latticework for his work represents the crystallization of nature's elements and minerals. The power of these forms in cast iron comes from their existence in nature.
